The Shelf

Norwegian petroleum, measured.

The Pulse

The sector, in numbers.

This board tracks the figures Norwegian petroleum runs on: production from the continental shelf, gas delivered to Europe, drilling activity, and the fields in operation.

Every figure is published exactly as its source released it, with the source named, dated, and linked. OilGas does not invent or estimate figures. When a source revises a number, the board is updated and the change is noted under Corrections.

The basics

How the shelf works.

Geography

Three seas, one shelf

Norwegian petroleum activity runs across three areas of the continental shelf: the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Barents Sea. The North Sea is the mature heartland, producing since 1971; the Norwegian Sea carries major gas production; the Barents Sea is the least explored and the sector's long-term frontier.

Data

The monthly production release

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate publishes production figures for the shelf every month: oil, gas, NGL, and condensate, by the shelf as a whole and by field, alongside its own forecasts. It is the sector's shared set of facts, and the backbone of the board above.

Access

Licensing rounds

Companies reach the shelf through licensing. Awards in predefined areas (APA) cover mature parts of the shelf on an annual cycle, while numbered rounds open less explored acreage. The Ministry of Energy announces the awards; the Offshore Directorate runs the technical work underneath them.

Transport

Gas to Europe

Almost all Norwegian gas travels by pipeline. Gassco operates the transport system that carries gas from the shelf to receiving terminals in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium, and publishes the volumes it transports, making Norwegian deliveries a matter of public record.
